For smelting matte, blast furnace has wide adaptability, high hearth efficiency, and high thermal efficiency. So in history, it is one of the most important copper smelting methods. Traditional blast furnace top is open, only can handle lump ore or agglomerate, flue gas contains low concentration of SO2, it is not easy to effectively recycle and has environmental pollution. In order to overcome the above shortcomings, in the mid - 1950 - s, the airtight blast furnace for copper concentrates smelting came out.
Compared with the traditional open furnace, imperial smelting furnace has the following advantages:
1. When open-type blast furnace smelting, flue gas’s SO2 concentration only about 0.5%, when airtight blast furnace smelting, flue gas’s SO2 concentration could reach 3% ~ 5%, and even more...Imperial smelting furnace not only can make acid, but also can reduce the environmental pollution.
2. Concentrate can be directly added in furnace just after kneading with water, imperial smelting furnace makes the process simplified, and saves a vast amount of sintering equipment, has many characteristics, such as less investment, quick construction and so on.
Imperial blast furnace’s main disadvantages are low hearth efficiency and low matte grade. With the development of science and technology, imperial blast furnace smelting has many improvements in technology.
1. Using hot air. It can strengthen the smelting process, improve hearth efficiency, reduce coke rate and labor intensity.
2. Oxygen-enriched blast. It can improve the hearth efficiency and melt temperature; reduce copper rate in slag and improve the recovery rate; reduce coke rate; SO2 concentration in furnace gas increases and reduce the environmental pollution.
